I don’t particularly like book covers, if I’m honest! Most of the time I find them too busy or too in your face! One of my favourite covers, for instance, is this one:
Simple isn’t it? But it gets its point across; it’s not dragging your eye in ten different directions and yet it still manages to convey the tone of the book – disturbing! If pushed I’d have to say that my favourite covers are the illustrated type. I find that I’m drawn towards them because they stand out, without being distracting! Of course, this type of cover would not work with some books. It wouldn’t, for example, work with Veronica Roth’s Divergent or Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games; dystopian genres. I think it does work for fairytales, gothic novels or poetic works; for example:
In my quest to find illustrated book covers that I liked, I stumbled across the Penguin Deluxe Classics of Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Initially I was a little perturbed, but after much deliberation I have found myself swaying in my opinion towards liking them!
In particular … Heathcliff!
